It's a bold game that explores mental health--specifically psychosis--through the lens of a character-action game wrapped in Norse mythology. The game tackles an important and often misunderstood illness, and allows you to better understand it through visual and aural presentation. Developer Ninja Theory has a long history of developing action games that are fast and fluid in movement while also being mechanically deep and complex, but for Hellblade, the developer scaled this back somewhat.

Playing Hellblade can feel rough and sluggish, but this feeds into the mind-state of its main character, Senua. Returning from self-imposed exile, the young Pict warrior grapples with her inner-demons as she attempts to save the soul of her lover, Dillon.

The act of fighting against demonic apparitions feels like a struggle, as Senua summons every ounce of energy in her body just to keep moving forward, one step at a time. And all the while voices in her head pull her in different directions, some guiding her, while others undermine and belittle her.

But the reason Cuphead is high on this list — and so high, at that — is because of its art and music, which make it feel like an interactive s cartoon. As a young woman, you return to a large family home on the outskirts of society in search of questions to a vague mystery.

But where Gone Home is the video game equivalent of a novella, Edith Finch progresses like a collection of short stories. Each room spurs flashbacks to its previous owner, the objective tied to a specific typically tragic moment in their life. You fly a kite on a stormy shore, take photos on a nature hike or pass a tedious workday with daydreams. It lulls the player with the mundanity of life, and just as in real life, the most shocking moments arrive without warning.

Edith Finch is one of the most existential walking sims out there, examining life and death with humor, grace and sincerity. On paper, Destiny 2 is the most generic flavor of video games: Dime-store sci-fi meets boardroom-approved monetization in a package that tries to merge the the two most exhausted genres of the past decade, the first-person shooter and the online role-playing game.

What elevates Destiny 2 above its contemporaries is its feel. It helps that Destiny 2 is the best console shooter since Gears of War. It just fe e ls right. There's a music cue in Butterfly Soup that, when it plays the first time, is shocking. Is it an amount of challenge? Is it a degree of interactivity? Who gives a shit? Here is a game that plays itself. It exists with or without you. We have the capacity to unmake this world. But with enough care and ingenuity, and a dollop of luck, we can remake it, too.

One-hundred-and-twenty-five hours later, and Persona 5 had snuck thief-like into my heart, changing how I forever felt about games like it. But Resident Evil 7 is something far more ambitious. EA and Activision will undoubtedly follow suit. They lead the charge. If you like combat, enemies are everywhere. If you like building a character, there are weapons and armor to collect and upgrade. If you like side quests, it has dozens of hours of them — including one where you straight-up build a town.

A series of stories about a strange, deceased family, each told with different first-person formats. First-person horror at its most disgusting, Outlast 2 suffers from some confusing stealth segments, but makes up for it with pure horror.

Bayonetta's fluid fighting style—combos, dodges, hair-based attacks—and absurd story deserved 4K and 60 fps support, and we're happy it's finally joined us.

If you dodge in the middle of a combo while holding down either punch or kick, you can resume the combo out of the dodge.

This offset speaks to the fluidity of Bayonetta's fighting style—as does the way she so smoothly transitions from dodge into attack, or from melee to guns. Stellaris' Utopia expansion overhauls politics, adds factions to your population, and introduces Tradition trees—which are how you might blot out the sun.

The add-on gives Stellaris a big push in the right direction, filling out the previously light mid-game. Big Robot, which is headed by former PC Gamer contributor Jim Rossignol, brings us a sci-fi shooter mystery that's two parts exploration—hopping and stomping around—and one part "crisp, satisfying combat," as our review states. It's slow-paced, but smart, lean, and a step above the developer's previous game, Sir, You Are Being Hunted.

Verdict: A fascinating setting and fizzing gunplay make for a lean, thoughtful exploration-led shooter. Manage a band of mercenaries, earn money to expand your operation and reach more distant contracts on the wide-open map, and fret over decisions in turn-based battles.

A throwback to '90s adventure games, but not a nostalgia-driven rehash—Thimbleweed Park builds on the genre and is great on its own merits. It's funny, and full of smart puzzles that "rarely require the absurd leaps of logic that would have you dialling the LucasArts hint line in the '90s," as Andy put it in his review. Verdict: A quality adventure game with challenging puzzles, oddball characters, and an intriguing, mystery-laden plot. If you aren't turned off by the obtuse introduction and constant, crushing challenge, Rain World rewards with unforgettable gloom.

You just have to be smart about it. You have to learn—and then very vaguely know —how to survive. An office favorite, Nier: Automata is bizarre open-world RPG with PlatinumGames' signature speed-comboing combat—but that can seamlessly transition into twin-stick shooting whenever it wants. The combination works, as does the mournful, weird story and all its quirks.

Andromeda is a contentious game, even—or maybe especially—among PC Gamer's staff and writers: some despise it, some enjoy it. It was burdened by high expectations, and didn't succeed at everything we hoped. But it makes our list if for nothing else because it proves unequivocally how many avenues developers have yet to explore, and how even something this simple can form a connection just as strong if not more so than the relentless bombast of games with a hundred times the budget.

After all, it was billed as a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment , long considered one of the greatest games ever made. The surprising part is Tides of Numenera mostly pulls it off. Each character has a pool of points which can be spent to ensure success on nearly any task, and those points replenish when you rest. Powerful right? In 30ish hours I only had to sit through a half-dozen fights.

You know, the same reasons people liked Planescape all those years ago. From cities hidden inside transdimensional space slugs to a tavern full of psychics to a room inside your own mind, Tides of Numenera always has some new wonder to show you. It took me three years, but I finally finished The Evil Within in October—after its sequel had already released. In the original Evil Within the brain in question belonged to a psychopath—the reason it all went so wrong. The block of verbs in the lower-left corner, stunning pixel art, mind-bending puzzles—they conjure up memories of Monkey Island , Maniac Mansion , Day of the Tentacle , and so on.

Thimbleweed Park is a Twin Peaks -esque town full of odd and unnerving characters though, like a foul-mouthed clown trapped at the local carnival, or a woman who converted her pie shop to sell vacuum tubes.
